Draft Announcement[edit source]

We are pleased to announce recent improvements to the Book and Paper Group Wiki page on Iron Gall Ink [link]. After the 2023 AIC Annual Meeting, the BPG Wiki Coordinators held a virtual discussion group on how to further develop this topic. Attendees provided many useful suggestions for how the page could improve and become more beneficial to our community.

Following up on that discussion, we formed a group to improve the page and incorporate these suggestions. Over the last year, we reorganized the page and added new citations and photos. We are particularly indebted to Crystal Maitland who shared her extensive bibliography, Denise Stockman who originally created this page, and all the authors who have published on this important topic. We would also like to thank Sarah Castro and Valeria Orlandini for their content contributions.

In its current version, the IGI wiki page is a curated and annotated (rather than comprehensive) list of resources. Like all wiki pages, this is a work in progress and we invite future editors to expand and improve on our efforts. For more information or to volunteer, please contact the BPG Wiki Coordinators at bookandpapergroup.wiki@gmail.com.

Thank you,

Rename page?[edit source]

Should this page be renamed as "BPG Iron-Gall Ink"?

I see that many of the sources cited on the page use the hyphen, but it seems like no-hyphen is more common throughout the page at present. Personally, I don't use the hyphen (and neither do a handful of colleagues I just briefly surveyed), so I guess I have a bias there. The Iron Gall Ink Wikipedia page and the Iron Gall Ink website both do not use the hyphen. This wiki page shows up in the wiki search results for either spelling, which is good. Since both appear to be in common usage, I don't think either one is wrong, but I would advocate for using whichever is more familiar to most people working in the US, since the wiki is a product of AIC. I'm not sure how we determine that. What are your thoughts? -Msmith (talk) 15:45, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
A similarly brief survey of the people working on this wiki page returned a preference for the unhyphenated version. CAMEO uses "iron gall ink". The Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus prefers "iron-gall ink" --Kkelly (talk) 20:05, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

New section on gelatin?[edit source]

KK suggest a section entitled Gelatin (taken from CM's bibliography)
