Disclaimers on the AIC Wiki[edit source]

The information below is collected from across the AIC wiki to begin a discussion on improving disclaimers across the site. Two types of statements are seen as necessary: --RPArenstein (talk) 18:04, 14 May 2017 (CDT)

  1. A statement on the Main Page
  2. Treatment pages - pages that discuss the specific of treatments should make it clear that this information is to be used by trained conservators who understand the treatments and materials. Using treatments on other materials e.g. paper treatment on other substrates, may result in damage. The disclaimer should link to Find A Conservator
  3. Statements that provide a clearly understood structure for where a page stands in the editing process. Some pages have been heavily vetted before they go off-line and others not. A standardized set of markers would be useful.

From the AIC wiki guidelines page section on disclaimers:
All pages regarding treatment or hands-on procedure have a disclaimer to advert against the use of the described procedures by non-conservators. The disclaimer reads: “ This article describes conservation procedures. It is meant to be used as exchange of technical information among trained art conservators and should not be used by non-conservators to intervene in cultural property."

BPG Disclaimer from https://www.conservation-wiki.com/w/index.php?title=Book_and_Paper_Group_Wiki&action=edit&section=5 The Paper Conservation Catalog and the AIC Wiki were developed by, and for, professional conservators. While persons in related fields will benefit from being acquainted with its content, neither is intended to provide step-by-step recipes for the untrained. Also, the PCC was created over the course of several decades, and there are out-of-date sections. When using the wiki, readers are strongly encouraged to consult the growing body of relevant literature.

  • Frequently-used disclaimers and copyright information should be placed in a template. When creating the template, be sure to use the Magic Words for the date, if the pages retains a current copyright. For example, putting {{CURRENTYEAR}} instead of a static '2012' for the date, will output an always-current year, like so: 2024. Magic Words are incredibly useful, for instance did you know that it's Monday, and the current month is April?
  • Here is an example of a copyright/disclaimer template:

  • Disclaimers can be placed at either the head or the footer of a page.
  • Information about contributors or original publication information (such as when the source material was published) can be mentioned in the body of the text or in a separate section of the page. Please use headers to distinguish this material from the other sections of the page, so that it does not float above the Table of Contents. This will help maintain a consistent look throughout the wiki.
