Chstephens is the username for Dr. Catherine H. Stephens, a conservation scientist who occasionally contributes to the wiki site.

Work Experience

Catherine is currently the Sally and Michael Gordon Conservation Scientist at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Previously, she worked on preventive conservation projects at the Department of Scientific Research at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Before that, she worked for 12 years as a research-focused conservation scientist, studying paper and synthetic polymer degradation.


Catherine has a Ph.D. degree in Macromolecular Science and Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. She also has two bachelors degrees, in Chemistry and Art History, from the State University of New York College at Geneseo. Her junior year in college, she spent a semester abroad in Florence, Italy.

Professional Affiliations

Catherine is a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC). She has served the AIC as a RATS chair (2013), is a contributor to the Wiki, and is an associate editor for the Journal of the American Institute of Conservation (JAIC) (since 2011).
