Talk:BPG Matting and Framing
This discussion page was started in July 2014 to collect ideas for improving the chapter. It includes the suggestions offered by the BPG Publications Committee, PCC Task Force in 2007-2009. Please feel free to add your own suggestions for improvement.
Suggestions for Improvement[edit source]
- PDF instructions made for different institution are welcome and could be the subject of a call for content.
- When the chapter was written in 1988, there was no bibliography. A short bibliography was added in 2017, but it could certainly be expanded.
- Mention Coroplast board, hexamount, microchamber board, and magnets.
- Give specific instructions on using silica gel packs (or link to this information).
- Discuss traditions in mat aesthetics.
- Re-evaluate references to using thymol-impregnated blotters, as this is probably not recommended anymore.--Kkelly (talk) 10:15, 19 September 2017 (CDT)
- Redraw the illustrations, as they are blurry and poor quality.
- Those illustrations really need help! I think even just re-screenshotting from the scanned pdf would be an incredible improvement, the ones on the page currently are illegible. Also all photos need to have a caption and to be bigger --Sandrine Blais (talk) 19:04, 28 November 2025 (UTC)
This cut from the Adhesive Removal page, unsure if info is here somewhere, but this is not apt for adhesive removal --Fopferman (talk) 22:19, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
If the exhibition requires a smaller dimension for the new mat a sink mat may be used. (See drawing at the end of this page.) To make a C-sink mat: a) Remove the original window (front mat), b) Determine outer dimensions for new mat, c) Cut new window mat, d) Place new window mat in correct position on top of the work and lightly mark the outside dimensions on the back mat (fig. 2), e) Cut the back mat following the marked lines using the C pattern (fig. 3). The two pieces removed need to be retained with markings for organization to avoid later confusion. f) Hinge the new face mat to the original, cut-down back mat for exhibition purposes. The pieces retained from cutting down the original backmat are then attached to a new support. Cut a piece of 2-ply or 4-ply rag board, depending on the support required, to the size of the original back mat. Attach the C-shaped piece to the new support using 3M 415 double-sided tape. Do not tape the right-hand strip onto the backing board at this point. Following the exhibition, remove the window mat from the original backmat and place the mounted object into the C-shaped sink created with the pieces. Attach the remaining right-hand strip to the backing with the 3M 415 double-sided tape (fig. 4). Place linen tape around the seams in the mat to hold the mounted art work in place (fig. 5).
