Conservators often rely on relationships with allied professionals for completing treatments, storage, exhibition and shipping of works of art. This list is a selection of (non-conservation) organizations representing topics of related to collection care and may be of particular interest to conservators for:

  • Conferences: Attend, present or exhibit at conferences related to conservation or get the word out the profession.
  • Consultants and Local Chapters: Need help or advice on a project? Many of these organizations offer directories of their members who can offer their specialized skills. Find a local chapter to participate in activities in the community.
  • Forums and Listservs: Be part of the discussion by asking or answering questions and staying updated on topics related to their work.
  • Grants and Scholarships: Apply for grants and scholarships through local, federal and international arts and collection organizations that fund conservation projects.
  • Job Listings: Looking for work? Find conservation and collection related positions.
  • Publications: Keep up to date with latest news with blogs, newsletters and journals from allied professionals.

AIC-Affiliated Groups[edit | edit source]

AIC offers several programs that are intended to connect conservators with the greater collection care community:

  • Alliance for Response A series of one-day forums designed to link key cultural heritage and emergency response representatives, leading to new partnerships and local projects. Alliance for Response fosters cooperation among cultural organizations, influences local planning efforts, and enhances the protection of cultural and historic resources. Several cooperative disaster networks have formed in the regions where Alliance for Response forums have been held.
  • Collection Care Network (CCN) This AIC network is designed to create awareness of preventive care; identify and develop standards and best practices, training, and other projects to advance preventive care in institutions of all types and sizes, locally, nationally, and globally; provide resources to support collection care and conservation professionals; work with related groups to reach and support key collections care constituents
  • Connecting to Collections Care (C2CC) An online community with a wealth of resources and assistance for small and mid-sized cultural institutions provided free of charge. |Forum|Courses|
  • Storage Techniques for Art, Science and History (STASH) This website provides information and tools so that institutions of all types, sizes and resource levels can learn how to create safe and appropriate storage solutions, written by and for collection care professionals in all fields.

Anthropology[edit | edit source]

  • American Anthropological Association (AAA) The world’s largest association for professional anthropologists covering all four main fields of anthropology (cultural anthropology, biological/physical anthropology, archaeology, and linguistic anthropology). The Association is organized into 40 sections, publishes a portfolio of 22 journals, offers career planning and professional development services, supports college and university departments, awards numerous prizes and fellowships, sponsors a paid summer internship program, a summer field school in ethnography and occupational therapy, stages research conferences in the Fall and Spring each year, and has a public education initiative that highlights the contributions made by anthropological research to important and enduring topics such as race and migration.

Archaeology[edit | edit source]

  • Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) Promotes archaeological inquiry and public understanding of the material record of the human past to foster an appreciation of diverse cultures and our shared humanity. The AIA supports archaeologists, their research and its dissemination, and the ethical practice of archaeology. The AIA educates people of all ages about the significance of archaeological discovery and advocates the preservation of the world's archaeological heritage
  • Society for American Archaeology (SAA) an international organization dedicated to the research, interpretation, and protection of the archaeological heritage of the Americas, representing professional, student, and avocational archaeologists working in a variety of settings including government agencies, colleges and universities, museums, and the private sector. SAA endeavors to stimulate interest and research in American archaeology; advocated and aid in the conservation of archaeological resources; encourage public access to and appreciation of archaeology; oppose all looting of sites and the purchase and sale of looted archaeological materials; and serve as a bond among those interested in the archaeology of the Americas.
  • Society for Historical Archaeology (SHA) The largest scholarly group concerned with the archaeology of the modern world (A.D. 1400-present). The main focus of the society is the era since the beginning of European exploration. SHA promotes scholarly research and the dissemination of knowledge concerning historical archaeology. The society is specifically concerned with the identification, excavation, interpretation, and conservation of sites and materials on land and underwater.

  • American Institute of Architects (AIA) Advocate for the value of architecture and give architects the resources they need to do their best work.
  • Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) A nonprofit membership organization that promotes the study, interpretation, and conservation of architecture, design, landscapes, and urbanism worldwide. SAH serves a network of local, national, and international institutions and individuals who, by profession or interest, focus on the history of the built environment and its role in shaping contemporary life. SAH promotes meaningful public engagement with the history of the built environment through advocacy efforts, print and online publications, and local, national, and international programs.

  • Society of Gilders A non-profit educational organization devoted to the art and craft of gilding with a mission is to preserve traditional gilding skills and techniques, and to promote the highest standards in the practice of gilding.

  • Arts, Crafts and Theater Safety (ACTS) A not-for-profit corporation that provides health, safety, industrial hygiene, technical services, and safety publications to the arts, crafts, museums, and theater communities.|Newsletter|
  • American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) One of the largest international associations serving occupational, environmental, health and safety professionals practicing industrial hygiene and is a resource for those in large corporations, small businesses and who work independently as consultants.​

  • Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Inspires libraries and museums to advance innovation, lifelong learning, and cultural and civic engagement and provides leadership through research, policy development, and grant making.
  • National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) An independent federal agency that funds, promotes, and strengthens the creative capacity of our communities by providing all Americans with diverse opportunities for arts participation.
  • National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) an independent federal agency promoting excellence in the humanities and conveying the lessons of history to all Americans by awarding grants for top-rated proposals examined by panels of independent, external reviewers.

  • American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) A national association that provides leadership and support for its members who preserve and interpret state and local history in order to make the past more meaningful to all people.
  • Association of African American Museums, (AAAM) A non-profit member organization established to support African and African American focus museums nationally and internationally, as well as the professionals who protect, preserve and interpret African and African American art, history and culture.
  • Association of Children's Museums, (ACM) The world's foremost professional member service organization for the children’s museum field. With more than 400 members in 48 states and 20 countries, we leverage the collective knowledge of children's museums through convening, sharing, and dissemination.
  • Association of Railway Museums, (ARM) An association dedicated to (1) providing a flow of information that will support and strengthen its members, (2) advocating for good regulation and legislation that ensures safety and the future of railway preservation, and (3) offering a variety of opportunities for members to share information and expertise.
  • Association of Science-Technology Centers, (ACTC) A global organization providing collective voice, professional support, and programming opportunities for science centers, museums, and related institutions, whose innovative approaches to science learning inspire people of all ages about the wonders and the meaning of science in their lives.
  • Council of American Jewish Museums, (CAJM) An organization focused on strengthening the Jewish museum field in North America by training museum staff and volunteers, advocating on behalf of Jewish museums, fostering a collegial network, and serving as a nexus for information exchange.
  • Council of American Maritime Museums, (CAMM) An organization dedicated to bringing together institutions working toward the preservation and interpretation of North America’s maritime heritage and fostering friendship and cooperation among member institutions in order to promotes research, exhibition, publication and mutual assistance among practitioners within the maritime heritage field.
  • Fire Museum Network, (FMN) A non-profit entity which provides a means for networking among fire museums and promotes the interests of those dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the artifacts, history, and traditions of the fire service.

  • Greater Hudson Heritage Network (GHHN) Network that serves the museum and history communities as a catalyst to advance professional standards and practices, build the capacity of organizations to meet their missions, and create a network of effective and professional stewards of regional history and culture - now and in the future.
  • Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums (MAAM) An association that supports and promotes excellence, ethics, and accessibility in museum practices to make the museums of the Mid-Atlantic region better able to preserve and interpret our diverse cultural, scientific, and aesthetic heritage. The Association will assist museums to carry out their missions for public service by developing and improving communication among the personnel of museums and other appropriate institutions in the region through meetings, symposia, publications and other professional activities.
  • Mountain Plains Museums Association (MPMA) A egional museum association in the West that has been at the forefront of museum professional development in this region. Its professional services and support are provided to museums and museum professionals in these ten states: Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming.
  • New England Museum Association (NEMA) Inspires and connects people engaged with the museum field, provides tools for innovative leadership, and empowers museums to sustain themselves as essential to their communities.
  • Small Museum Association An all volunteer organization serving small museums in the mid-Atlantic region and beyond. SMA's mission is to develop and maintain a peer network among people who work for small museums, giving them opportunities to learn, share knowledge and support one another, so that they, in turn, can better serve their institutions, communities and profession.
