Mold6.jpg (635 × 435 pixels, file size: 72 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)
Mold removed from paper with clear tape and examined under a microscope (transmitted light 40 x). Overall Appearance: Mold growth is evident on the canvas reverse as brownish-grey colonies, distinct from the reddish stains caused by penetration of paint media from the front of the painting. Closer magnification reveals aerial fungal structures. Light Microscopy: Greenish-yellow conidia and birefringent particles and fibers are present. Conidia are globose and appear yellowish-green in transmitted light, and are organized in long bead-like strands indicating the presence of a species such as Aspergillus. Photo by Ann Baldwin, 2008.
