BINDING DESCRIPTION
BINDING TERM Bradel: A type of binding that originated in Germany with the shop of Alexis Pierre Bradel. Characterized by a hollow back, similar to a library binding, and generally having split boards that were attached to the text block by a cloth spine lining. Many bindings "a la Bradel" are quarter bound with cloth or leather spine and paper sides.
DECORATION Front and back boards have simple frame of gold lines, spine has eight gold lines and five rosettes, with gold tooled title. Turn-ins are gold tooled. Silk endleaves.
REPAIRS  
COVER material/hardware, etc, corner style/turn ins, repairs Full red goat with gold tooling, untrimmed turn ins, overlapped corners. Hollow back, no bands.
BOARDS material, back cornering Rigid boards, no shaping, no back cornering.
SPINE rounding/ backing lining Rounded and backed, lining of printer's waste.
ENDBANDS style, material/color, core material Pink, blue, and white silk endbands with a front bead over a cord core.
SEWING style, # stations, support material lacing in Sewing is not visible except at endpapers: endpapers sewn all along over five supports which are adhered under paste down.
ENDPAPERS material, # of flyleaves/attachment Blue silk pastedown and conjugate made flyleaf, two plain cream (3) medium (2) moderately textured (2) laid paper flyleaves.
TEXT BLOCK material, edge treatment Cream (3) medium (1) moderately textured (3) handmade laid paper. Edges gilt.
HOUSING  
NOTES The bindings Bradel was famous for are typically quarter style; this full leather binding does, however, display many of the functional aspects associated with the Bradel style.
