Late Bronze Age (11-10th c. BC) faience bead from the site of Lofkend (Albania) This area of the bead is deteriorated and the glazed surface has been lost. In this photomicrograph of the core material, the quartz grains are visible and the interior has a "sugary" appearance. This is due to the fact faience is heated to sinter the quartz grains, but not fully melt them. (Image courtesy of the Lofkend Archaeological Project)
