The production of this volume could not have been realized without a generous donation to the Barnes Foundation from Dr. and Mrs. John Herring, a grant from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, and additional funding from the Paintings Specialty Group (PSG) of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC). For their support, we extend our heartfelt gratitude.

The task of writing and compiling Volume II of the Painting Conservation Catalog, Stretchers and Strainers, has been a volunteer effort accomplished primarily by the membership of the Paintings Specialty Group. The editorial board of the Painting Conservation Catalog thanks the membership of the PSG for their ongoing support of this project by their collegial discussions and contributions to this volume; indeed, we thank all our colleagues, too numerous to list, for the help they have provided on this project. We also thank the AIC staff for their support of this project and assistance in procuring the Samuel H. Kress Foundation grant. It is with deep appreciation that we thank Derek Gillman, Executive Director and President of the Barnes Foundation, for his assistance and understanding of the importance of this project to the conservation field.

The Painting Conservation Catalog developed from a recognized need to record the current treatment practices and philosophies in the field of painting conservation. An effort has been made to present diverse treatment approaches and philosophies, and to make the catalog a guidebook of ideas for the experienced painting conservator. In this effort, we also recognize the work of our predecessors and colleagues that provided the groundwork for this volume. The seminal work of Richard Buck to systematically look at and describe stretchers provided a framework and the inspiration for this volume. For recognition of stretchers as historic objects integral to the history of a painting, we must give credit to Eleanor S. Quandt. To our colleague Alex Katlan goes recognition of the enormous resource he has provided through his published volumes on patents for stretchers and directories of colormen and artist suppliers.

Many thanks go to our copyeditor, Amy Azzam, and our designers, Greer Beeken and Reece Quiñones, who have transformed our words and images into a professional publication. My most sincere thanks go to my colleagues on the editorial board who provided continual support and tireless effort throughout this project.
