BINDING DESCRIPTION
BINDING TERM American: Early American binding
COVER material/hardware, etc corner style/turn ins Full brown tanned animalskin (perhaps calf), uneven turn ins, overlapped corners. Six raised bands, tightback.
DECORATION style Concentric frame pattern tooled in blind, crossed in the middle and stained with acid to create a darkened area of two triangles. Large fluerons and additional blind fillets, possibly creating the initials "A M." Blind ties. Spine tooled with blind fillets. Two pairs of clasps with catch on the front board.
BOARDS material back cornering Paper board, unshaped, backcornered.
SPINE rounding/ backing lining Rounded and backed. Linings are not visible.
ENDBANDS style material/color core material Front bead endbands, (pink or red?) and (white?) over cane or wood cores.
SEWING style support material lacing in Sewing pattern not visible. Six cord supports frayed out, board attachment not visible.
ENDPAPERS material # of flyleaves/attachment Pastedowns are laminated layers of the North-Carolina Chronicle or Fayetteville Gazette. Additional atypical blank flyleaf has a watermark which reads "J Honic & Zoonen."
TEXT BLOCK material edge treatment Brown medium (2) moderately textured (2) handmade laid paper. Trimmed.
